There are many reasons why a girl can suffer from missed period, The first thought of course is the possibility of being pregnant, if sexual activity has been taking place. Aside from this, there are many potential causes of irregular menstruation, and one of these is thyroid disorder.
Within the realm of thyroid malfunction there are many variances. These can be specific diseases such as Grave’s disease, or forms of hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism means the thyroid glands are under active, and not producing the right amount of hormones that they create.
Hyperthyroidism is just the opposite, and in the case the thyroid gland is over producing the thyroid hormone.
Either one of these conditions has its own set of symptoms..
Scientists and are not too sure what the link between thyroid disease and the menstrual cycle is, but there have been specific symptoms noted, depending on the type of thyroid malfunction. Often if the condition is hyperthyroidism, the girl is late starting into menstruation, and in other words puberty is delayed.
For those women that are experiencing missed period, it is usually hyperthyroidism that is the cause, if the underlying factor is problems with the thyroid.
Most often women who go to their doctor with this type of complaint of missed period, discover that the doctor will first and foremost do an examination to see if there are any potential thyroid problems.
It must be remembered though, even if a female isn’t suffering from missed period, that it doesn’t mean that she is definitely not experiencing thyroid problems. It is not a definite symptom of all thyroid malfunctions, or even in hyperthyroidism.
It is understandable that the thyroid could have an effect on the menstrual cycle, as it is a hormone producer, and the problem with missed period most often is, it is all based around the imbalance of the hormones needed for the reproductive system.

Recently I had decided to adopt a new healthier lifestyle. I was in good physical condition, and never had an issue with missed period. Needless to say that after being at this new healthy regime for a while, and my menstrual cycle became abnormal, I was really concerned.
I had heard somewhere that exercising can affect the menstrual cycle, but I didn’t give much thought to it then. I knew I wasn’t pregnant, and I had just had my yearly medical, so I began to suspect that something I was doing was creating the problem. I did some research pertaining to this.
Excessive exercise can in fact cause period irregularities. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will totally be subjected to missed period, but you may have symptoms such as spotting or intermittent bleeding, or even painful menstruation. This doesn’t mean that every woman that becomes involved in strenuous sports or excessive exercise, will run into these types of problems, as it totally depends on the individual.
The explanation for this happening is because during long regimes of excessive exercise the body needs more energy. While it is producing this new needed energy it ignores some of the other body functions like the menstrual cycle. This is not a dangerous situation, but if it goes on for any length of time, then reducing the amount of exercise may be advisable.
If this has become a problem for you, ideally you should speak to your medical advisor as to whether you should continue with your exercise program, and also to be sure that this is the root cause of the problem.
Another interesting fact to take note of is, that it can take several months of missed period before the menstrual cycle will return to normal, even after stopping the exercise completely.

The first thing a woman wants to check when she is suffering from missed period, is to make sure that she is not pregnant. The next concern with sexually active women that are having trouble with their menstrual cycle, is to ensure that there are no sexually transmitted diseases that she is suffering from.
These can be diseases such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia or syphilis for example, as they all have a tendency to create missed period. They certainly are something that can be of a concern, if protective sex has not been practiced.
Identifying that a STD is the potential cause of the missed period is most important. Most times early treatment means a success in completely eliminating the disease. In many cases antibiotics are utilized as a form of treatment. However, there are some STDs that there is no cure from, such as HIV or other conditions such as Hepatitis B and C.
One of the problems is that gonorrhoea at one time was quite easily cured, but it is now being noted that it is becoming resistant, to the types of antibiotics that were originally used. Missed period is just one of many symptoms that can be present with a STD. The symptoms vary and their severity is determined by the progression of the Sexually Transmitted Disease.
There are specific tests that will be used to determine if there is a STD present, and it is also most important to know which particular one that it is, in order to be able to find the right treatment.
Therefore any woman that is suffering from missed period really needs to have a thorough check-up, particularly if she is sexually active, to rule out any possibility of the cause being STDs. It should not just be assumed that the irregularity in the menstrual cycle will correct itself as the problem will only escalate as long as the STD is present if this is the cause.

The medical name for the pituitary tumor is Prolactanoma. This is a benign tumor, and one of the symptoms can be missed period. Basically, what happens is that this type of tumor will produce too much of the hormone called Prolactin. You may be familiar with this hormone, as it is what produces the milk for breastfeeding. The pituitary gland itself is the gland that provides our growth rate amongst other functions. It works very closely with other types of hormonal glands.
The more common symptoms that are indicators that there may be a pituitary tumor are as follows…
- missed menstruation
- irregular menstrual cycles,
- infertility
- vaginal dryness.
Some women who are suffering from this condition will begin to produce breast milk even though they are not pregnant. It can mislead some into thinking that they are pregnant because of this.
This is not a condition that is strictly restricted to women either, as men can also suffer from prolactin deficiency or a pituitary tumor, and in their case they will have the symptoms of being impotent. In addition to this, they will also probably suffer from headaches and or have problems with their vision.
This type of brain tumor is a benign tumor, and the definite cause has yet been to be determined. It has also been noted that it is not something that runs in the family. It has been noted that there’s been some other type of genetic disorders that the individual is suffering from as well.
It is common for a pituitary tumor to create the symptom of missed period because of the role the pituitary gland plays in the body’s functions. It produces a hormone that regulates the ovulation in a woman as well as keeps her estrogen and progesterone levels where they should be.
